Copper Mountain Ski Resort Colorado

Copper Mountain is a ski resort located in Summit County, Colorado, 75 miles west of Denver in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Opened in late 1972, it is now owned and operated by Intrawest and provides golf and mountain biking activities during the summer months. It is renowned for its wide variety of naturally divided terrain, well suited to more experienced skiers and boarders.

Regarded as a Local's Mountain

Like other nearby resorts, Arapaho Basin and Ski Cooper, Copper Mountain is traditionally regarded as a local's mountain. Before it was purchased by Intrawest, Copper tended to be skied more by Coloradans than tourists. Unlike resorts like Vail or Winter Park, it usually has fewer lines and shorter wait times, even in high season.

Copper Mountain ColoradoA Ski Resort on the Move

Intrawest Corporation has pumped considerable investment into improving the three villages at Copper Mountain. Construction is ongoing to complete dozens of new hotels, condominiums, restaurants, shops, and bars. These new amenities are designed to draw tourists to discover the mountain's new lift system, the world class golf courses, tennis clubs and gold medal fishing streams.

Great Skiing and Riding for All Abilities

The ski area features beginner slopes on the western side of the mountain (which have garnered criticism in the past for being either too steep or flat) and intermediate slopes in the centre and expert terrain on the eastern side. Advanced 'double black diamond' slopes can be found on the two peaks above 12,000 feet (Copper and Union Peaks), including four expert-only bowls. Also, the resort is very high and it can get very cold so bring your winter woollies!

All in all, Copper Mountain is a rough diamond of a ski resort. Although not famous for its nightlife, Intrawest's investment has set the foundations for a lively resort. This is great news for the area but serious skiers and riders may want to check out the stunning natural terrain before the Copper diamond gets polished by the inevitable pitter-patter of tourism.
